"Nights in White Satin" was written by Justin Hayward and recorded by the British rock band The Moody Blues in 1967. It first appeared on their landmark album Days of Future Passed. The Story Behind the Song: Justin Hayward was only 19 years old when he wrote it. According to Hayward, the inspiration came after the end of a relationship. The title was inspired by white satin sheets that had been given to him by a girlfriend. The song reflects longing, regret, and the emotions of letters written but never sent. In 1967, most rock songs did not feature full orchestral arrangements. "Nights in White Satin" blended rock instruments with symphonic orchestration, helping establish what later became known as progressive rock or symphonic rock. The lush strings and haunting atmosphere were revolutionary for the time.
