A group of immensely wealthy cattle barons, furious at the small independent ranchers and homesteaders whom they accuse of rustling their stock, decide to take the law entirely into their own hands. Rather than wait for courts and juries, they quietly assemble a private army of hired gunmen and draw up a chilling death list, planning to invade neighboring Johnson County and exterminate the very men they've branded as thieves. Into this powder keg drifts Sam Lowell, a free-spirited, quick-witted Bostonian disowned by his family and left penniless out West, surviving on clever bar bets and charm. He falls in with a crusty, reluctant Wyoming cowboy who has been hired as one of the gunmen but wants no part of the coming slaughter. Talking his way onto the expedition by posing as a sympathetic newspaperman there to record the cattlemen's "heroic" deeds, Sam soon finds his conscience pulling him the other way.
