I play steel guitar in The Volcano Brothers in Nashville, and In this series I'm teaching Pre-WW2 era acoustic Hawaiian steel guitar. I'll be showing you how to play every song from our new album called "Light of the Hilo Moon". In this episode, we dive into the complicated little number "An Orange Grove in California" written by Irving Berlin. He wrote this song for a Broadway production in 1922 and it was very popular at the time. Sol Hoʻopiʻi would have heard it and started playing it with his band, and his Novelty Quartet recorded their version in 1933, which is the version I learned at some point and started playing it. I've broken this one up in to 4 parts to deal with all the slants, double stops, and melodic variations that come up in this unique piece of music. The Volcano Brothers are a 5-piece band based in Nashville, playing and honoring the music of the innovators of Hawaiian steel guitar, including Sol Hoʻopiʻi, King Bennie Nawahi, Sol K. Bright, Roy Smeck, Pale K. Lua, Jerry Byrd, and many more. The band features Steve Dawson on steel guitar and Nashville legends Fats Kaplin, Richard Bennett, Dave Jacques and Andy Reiss. Their debut album "Light of the Hilo Moon" comes out Sept. 25, 2026 on vinyl and a as a digital hi-res download on Bandcamp only (no streaming for this one!). The Volcano Brothers perform regularly around Nashville, and occasionally other places as well... Links: Pre-Order a vinyl copy of "Light of the Hilo Moon" https://www.stevedawson.ca/volcano-br...
