It was a lucky day for me. I saw tigers for the first time after visiting few of the national parks where I ended up not seeing the elusive king of the jungle. Sighting tigers is a matter of luck. I was lucky that day. I have been to Panna Tiger reserve thrice including this trip and safaris. On the two trips, luck wasn't on my side. But on the third time, it was a surreal experience to see tigers in real in her own territory. Not just tigers, this time, I got a chance to go to Hinauta side from Madla. Hinauta was altogether a different experience. The landscape changes once we left Madla. Two amazing contrasting views in one jungle.
We also saw Sloth bear enjoying Jujebe fruits on the tree. The Vultures nesting point at Hinauta offers a pleasant view of rocky cliffs where Vultures nest during dry season. In monsoon, the nesting points turn into waterfalls. On this side of Hinauta, one also gets to see the world's oldest living elephant - Vatsala, 100 years old. Taking care of Vatsala is Bapu (Vatsala''s grandson)
The success story of how Panna got her tigers backs can be credited to R Sreenivasa Murthy, former Director of Panna Tiger reserve, who revived the Tiger Re-introductory Project. After tigers were totally eliminated largely by poaching and partly due to human-animal conflict, Tigers were brought from Bhandhavgarh National Park and Kanha National Park under this Tiger Project. Later, as tiger numbers grew, Forest Department tied up with NGO's to rebilitate the Pardhis tribe of Panna and gave them alternate livelihood options.
It was this passion, patience, determination and hard-work of Mr Murthy along with his team that saw the light of the day. The tigers in Panna roars back marking their own territory.
Special thanks to Kamran Ali for footage of tiger and sloth bear.
