Hello friends, and welcome back to my London wildlife allotment! 💚
This time, I’m sharing the build of my new wildlife pond—from removing an old, leaking pond mould to creating a new home for the frogs already living on the plot.
It’s been a long time coming! I’ll take you through the digging, preparing the ground, fitting the liner, filling the pond and landscaping the edges with reclaimed stone, logs, gravel and woodchips. Along the way, I share what I learned, what I might do differently and how I kept the costs down.
The pond is still settling in, but frogs are already jumping in, birds are visiting, and I’m excited to see how it develops through winter and into spring.
🌿 MATERIALS USED
Pond liner: https://www.pondkeeper.co.uk/pond-lin...
White cobbles / rockery stones: https://www.diy.com/departments/river...
Gravel: https://www.diy.com/departments/10-20...
Woodchips: https://www.diy.com/departments/verve...
The York stone slabs were reused from my home garden, and the logs and branches came from the allotment. I also experimented with reused builders’ sacks beneath the liner—something I’m still testing rather than confidently recommending.
🌱 PLANTS ADDED
Hornwort
Yellow flag iris, planted in pots
Brooklime
I’m Ruairí, and A Place to Grow follows my journey of growing and creating space for wildlife on an overgrown London allotment. There’s plenty still to do, and I’d love you to follow along.
Have you built a wildlife pond? Let me know what moved in first! 🐸
