The closest star to our Sun is just four light-years away, and you've never seen it. No human who has ever lived has spotted Proxima Centauri with their bare eyes. Yet tonight, you'll easily see stars like Deneb and Rigel burning bright from hundreds or even thousands of light-years away. How is that possible? The answer reveals one of astronomy's most overlooked truths: the night sky you see is a lie by omission. Most of the stars actually surrounding us, our true nearest neighbors, are completely invisible. They're red dwarfs, tiny cool stars that make up roughly 75% of all stars in the Milky Way, yet produce so little visible light that not a single one can be seen without a telescope.
