The Disappearance of Michele Hundley Smith | The Long Absence

On December 9, 2001, Michele Hundley Smith left her North Carolina home for a Christmas shopping trip. Her family expected her back within a couple of hours. Her absence would last more than twenty-four years. The Long Absence follows the search, the competing explanations, and the developments in 2026 that changed the meaning of the case. It examines both what the public record establishes and what remains unanswered. Theories are discussed in the context of what was known at the time. Reported family accounts are attributed and should not be mistaken for established findings. Illustrative scenes are labeled in the film. Voice credit: ElevenLabs (Eric).
