Can one man run 6.71 km (4.167 mi) every hour, for 168 consecutive hours?
Backyard Ultra World Record Holder and World Champion Phil Gore is attempting something that has never been done before.
168 hours. 168 laps. 1,127 kilometres (700 miles). Solo.
Inspired by the Backyard Ultra format created by Lazarus “Laz” Lake (Gary Cantrell), Project 168 takes the familiar backyard concept and turns it into a different kind of challenge.
In a traditional backyard ultra, runners complete a 6.71 km (4.167 mile) yard every hour until only one runner remains. The final runner must complete one more yard than everyone else to win.
But at Project 168, there is no field. There is no assist. There is no last person standing.
Just Phil Gore, the clock and 168 hours.
Every hour, on the hour, Phil must start again.
If he makes it to the end, he will have run 168 consecutive yards and 1,127 kilometres (700 miles) across seven days and seven nights.
And he's doing it to raise money for Telethon.

WHY PHIL GORE?
Phil Gore is one of the world's most accomplished Backyard Ultra runners.
In 2025 at Dead Cow Gully Backyard Ultra in Queensland, Australia, Phil set the Backyard Ultra World Record with 119 yards. That's approximately 798 km across almost five days of running.
New Zealand ultrarunner Sam Harvey was his assist, completing an extraordinary 118 yards before Phil completed the final yard to establish the world record.
Phil is also a Backyard Ultra World Champion, making Project 168 an attempt to discover just how far one of the best backyard runners in the world can go when there is no other runner determining the finish line.
WHAT IS A BACKYARD ULTRA?
The Backyard Ultra was created by Lazarus “Laz” Lake (Gary Cantrell), the legendary race director also known for creating the Barkley Marathons and Big's Backyard Ultra.
The concept is brutally simple:
🏃 Run 6.71 km / 4.167 miles
⏱️ Finish within one hour
🔔 Start another yard exactly on the next hour
🔁 Repeat until only one runner remains
The format has grown into a worldwide ultrarunning phenomenon.
If you followed Big's Backyard Ultra, Dead Cow Gully Backyard Ultra, or the recent Last Soul Ultra, Project 168 takes the same relentless hourly format into completely new territory.
At the 2026 Last Soul Ultra in Germany, American ultrarunner Mark Dowdle was the last runner standing after an incredible 94 yards.
Phil is attempting 168.
RUNNING FOR TELETHON
Project 168 is about more than finding Phil's physical and mental limits.
Phil is running to raise money for Telethon, which has been supporting children and families in Western Australia since 1968.
Telethon raises funds for children's charities, organisations and medical services across WA, helping provide life-changing medical equipment, vital services and programs, children's health research and support for sick, vulnerable and disadvantaged children.
Every donation made through Project 168 supports Telethon and its work helping WA kids.
