In 1932, a Dutch couple set out on a remarkable road journey from Pakan-Baru to Padang, crossing the interior of Sumatra by car. The journey was far from simple. Two cars had to be carried across a river on a pontoon before continuing along rough roads, bridges, forests, and winding mountain routes. The camera captures the changing landscape along the way—from the lowlands and dense forests to the hills and mountains of the Bukit Barisan range. Along the route, the travelers encounter local communities, traditional architecture, waterfalls, and the dramatic mountain roads that connected the eastern and western sides of Sumatra. Eventually, the journey reaches Padang, where the landscape gives way to the bustle of city life. The final scenes capture a street market, with vendors and local residents going about their daily activities. Recorded by an amateur camera in 1932, this film offers a rare glimpse of what it was like to travel across Sumatra nearly a century ago. The original film is part of an amateur film documenting the journey by car from Pakan-Baru to Padang. 🎞️ Historical amateur film 📍 Sumatra, Dutch East Indies — 1932 🚗 Pakan-Baru → Padang 🎥 Amateur footage 🔧 Restored & enhanced for archival viewing This footage has been carefully restored and enhanced for historical preservation and educational purposes, including stabilization, image enhancement, and color restoration where appropriate.
