Have you ever had a thought come to you and wondered, “Was that God—or was that just me?” If you genuinely want to follow God, learning how to test what you hear can save you from both confusion and unnecessary fear.
In this FaithTalk Bible study, Pastor Donnie Miller explains how to recognize the difference between God’s leading and your own thoughts in simple, practical terms.
We’ll talk about:
Why not every thought should be trusted
How to test what you think God may be saying
Why God’s voice will never contradict Scripture
How the Holy Spirit can bring truth to your remembrance
Why humility matters when we say, “God told me”
How to avoid becoming afraid of missing God
Why knowing God’s Word helps you recognize His voice
Jesus said in John 10:27, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.”
But Scripture also teaches us to test what we hear. 1 John 4:1 tells us not to believe every spirit, but to test them, and 2 Corinthians 10:5 reminds us to bring our thoughts into captivity.
One of the safest principles you can remember is this:
God will never lead you contrary to His Word.
The Holy Spirit inspired Scripture. He will never contradict what God has already spoken.

Which is hardest for you to distinguish—God’s leading, your own thoughts, or your emotions?
And while you’re there, encourage somebody else. We’re learning together.
If you know someone who has ever wondered, “Was that really God?”, share this teaching with them.
