THE FIRST 3 LETTERS OF YOUR SURNAME REVEAL EXACTLY WHERE YOUR SCOTTISH FAMILY CAME FROM

What do the first three letters of your surname reveal about your Scottish family history? Your surname may be more than just a family name. It can carry clues about Scottish regions, medieval families, occupations, migration, Border history, Highland traditions, and centuries of Norse and Anglo-Norman influence. In this video, we explore 13 Scottish surname clues, starting from number 13 and counting down to number 1. From the Scottish Borders to the Highlands, Moray, Loch Lomond, Caithness, Orkney, and northeastern Scotland, each surname takes us into a different chapter of Scottish history. We explore surnames beginning with: 13. ARM — Armstrong 14. KER — Kerr 15. SCO — Scott 16. DOU — Douglas 17. BUC — Buchanan 18. FRA — Fraser 19. CAM — Cameron 20. ROS — Ross 21. SIN — Sinclair 22. MUR — Murray 23. GOR — Gordon 24. GRA — Graham 25. STE — Stewart You’ll discover how some Scottish surnames became connected to particular territories, while others were shaped by medieval power, migration, occupations, Border communities, Highland traditions, and Norse influence. And there’s an important detail: the first three letters of a surname cannot prove your exact ancestry or identify one specific ancestor. Surnames changed spelling, families moved, branches separated, and unrelated families could share the same name. Think of these three-letter clues as a historical starting point for genealogy, not a DNA test. If your surname begins with ARM, KER, SCO, DOU, BUC, FRA, CAM, ROS, SIN, MUR, GOR, GRA, or STE, your name may point toward a fascinating chapter of Scottish history. 👇 What’s the first three letters of your surname?
