This soul-stirring noha gives voice to Bibi Fatima Zahra (sa), who descends from Paradise to weep over the blessed body of her beloved son, Imam Hussain (as), lying on the burning sands of Karbala , denied even a shroud (kafan). In these verses, the Lady of Light (sa) cries out to her son: 🥀 "My poor one, my hungry one, my thirsty one... my martyr of longing, my Hussain, Hussain." 🥀 "I have come from Paradise to mourn you, my son , rise and console your grieving mother." 🥀 "Shaam (Syria) is inhabited, yet Madina lies desolate... and your mother's grave lies forsaken." 🥀 "I once grieved over the mark of a rope on a blessed neck , but your neck, my son, was severed by the sword." 🥀 "Batool raised you, grinding the mill with her own blistered hands... so why, O heavens, did you grind my Hussain?" The Meaning Behind This Poetry: This marsiya captures one of the most heartbreaking dimensions of the tragedy of Karbala , that Imam Hussain (as), the grandson of the Prophet (saww), the son of Ali (as) and Fatima (sa), was left without water, without burial, without even a kafan. The poet imagines Bibi Zahra (sa), who herself endured immense suffering, arriving at the maqtal to mourn a grief no mother should ever know. Her toil in raising him (grinding grain until her hands blistered) is contrasted with the cruelty of the world that "ground" him at Karbala. It is a lament that connects the sorrows of the Ahlul Bayt (as) across time, reminding us that the tears shed for Hussain (as) began in the heavens before they ever reached the earth.
