America's Diesel Crisis Just Got Real!

America's diesel crisis just got real. For weeks I've been documenting diesel prices climbing toward $7 a gallon and what those prices are doing to truckers, farmers and businesses across the country. But we're entering a different phase now. Multiple states are expanding or considering expanded use of red-dyed diesel on public roads. Texas has declared a statewide disaster over the diesel situation and temporarily relaxed weight restrictions so certain fuel, agricultural and timber trucks can gross up to 95,000 pounds. At the federal level, hours-of-service requirements have been temporarily relaxed for qualifying truckers transporting gasoline and diesel. These aren't normal measures. We're changing trucking regulations, fuel rules and transportation restrictions in an effort to keep diesel moving where it's needed. And as an owner-operator, this is the part of the story I think everyone needs to understand: diesel isn't just another product Americans buy at the gas station. Diesel moves America. It moves the trucks carrying groceries to your store. It powers agricultural equipment producing our food. It moves construction equipment, freight and huge portions of the American supply chain.
