What constitutes an addiction, and what makes the most addictive substances so addictive? A big factor is how quickly the brain gets the reward it’s seeking.
Dopamine is a key driver of addiction, and it’s not a pleasure hormone like most people think. Dopamine plays a major role in wanting and seeking a reward, like opening the refrigerator and looking for something even though you’re already full.
One of the most powerful addictions today is smartphone addiction. Checking your texts, emails, and social media feeds can consume hours of your life. The average person checks their phone around 130 to 160 times per day! Smartphone addiction can become especially dangerous when it leads to behaviors like texting while driving.
One way to help break an addiction is to add friction and time between yourself and the behavior.
