Welcome to Intro to Indian Classical Music – Lesson 11. In this lesson, we begin learning another important rhythmic cycle of Hindustani music — Dadra Taal. I am Samarendra Mondal, disciple of Pandit Debaprasad Chakraborty of the Maihar Gharana. In the previous lessons, we explored Teentaal and learned about Matra, Vibhag, Tali, Khali, Sam and Theka. Now we move from the 16-Matra cycle of Teentaal to the shorter 6-Matra cycle of Dadra Taal. IN THIS LESSON, YOU WILL LEARN: • What is Dadra Taal? • 6-Matra structure of Dadra • 3 + 3 Vibhag division • Sam on Matra 1 • Khali on Matra 4 • Clap and Wave hand gestures • Basic Dadra Theka • Dha Dhi Na | Dha Tu Na • Counting the complete Dadra cycle • Identifying Sam and Khali • Internal counting • Dadra vs Teentaal • Dadra in vocal music • Dadra in Sitar playing • Developing rhythmic awareness DADRA TAAL STRUCTURE Dadra consists of 6 Matras divided into two Vibhags: 3 + 3 The structure is: 1 2 3 | 4 5 6 The main landmarks are: 1 – Sam 4 – Khali Hand gestures: Clap | Wave BASIC DADRA THEKA The commonly taught basic Theka used in this lesson is: Dha Dhi Na | Dha Tu Na Repeat: Dha Dhi Na | Dha Tu Na As you practise, gradually move from counting the numbers aloud to feeling the complete six-Matra cycle internally. DADRA VS TEENTAAL Teentaal: 16 Matras Dadra: 6 Matras Teentaal: 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 Dadra: 3 + 3 Remember: a shorter Taal does not mean that you can become less precise. You must remain aware of every Matra, especially Sam and Khali. TODAY'S CHALLENGE Complete 10 cycles of Dadra using: Clap | Wave and: Dha Dhi Na | Dha Tu Na Then complete another 5 cycles without saying the numbers aloud. Try to maintain the complete cycle internally. Ask yourself: • Did I maintain the pulse? • Did I recognise Khali? • Did I return correctly to Sam? If you lose the cycle, simply start again. Accuracy is more important than speed. LEARN SITAR FROM ME I offer structured online Sitar classes for students who want to learn Indian Classical Music systematically.
