Liuhua Lake Park Guangzhou: A City Oasis on an Ancient Lakebed｜广州流花湖公园：古湖旧址上的城市绿洲

Filmed on: September 28, 2026 Location: Liuhua Lake Park, Yuexiu District, Guangzhou, China Liuhua Lake Park covers 544,300 square metres in the heart of Guangzhou's Yuexiu District, with over half of that area taken up by its lake. The site was once known as Zhilan Lake during the Jin dynasty, and by the 1950s it had become low-lying farmland prone to flooding. In 1958, the city mobilised residents to dig four artificial lakes by hand, and Liuhua Lake opened as a public park in October 1959. Today the park is known for Liuhua West Garden, the birthplace of Lingnan penjing — a bonsai tradition where trees are shaped over decades into miniature landscapes, some over 160 years old. It is also known for the white European-style building reflected in the lake, known locally as the "White House on the Water," and for Egret Island, where night herons and egrets roost.
