Residents of *Nkombo Island in Rusizi District* have received a new passenger boat intended to improve transport between the island and the mainland. According to *Rusizi District**, the boat was provided to residents as a gift from President **Paul Kagame* and officially handed over on **September 16, 2026**, in partnership with the Rwanda Transport Development Agency (RTDA). The new *Water Taxi* has capacity for *51 seated passengers* and can also carry up to **5 tonnes of cargo**. Residents are expected to pay approximately **RWF 1,200 for a round trip**, making the service an important addition to daily transport for people living on the island. For Nkombo residents, transport by water is not simply a matter of convenience. It is essential for reaching schools, health services, markets, workplaces and other public services on the mainland. The boat is therefore expected to help: improve passenger mobility; support movement of agricultural produce and other goods; reduce transport challenges faced by island residents; strengthen access to education, healthcare and markets; support local trade and economic activity. Reports indicate that the boat took about *three months to build* and cost more than **RWF 250 million**. This development comes as Rwanda continues investing in transport infrastructure around **Lake Kivu and Rusizi**, while longer-term options for improving connectivity between Nkombo Island and the mainland continue to be discussed.
