Question 🤔
Have you ever heard “you’ve changed,” or said it? Which side of that sentence was harder? 👇 Reply.. in Comments
“You are not the person I met.” Why does that sentence hurt so much, and why is it both true and unfair?
About 2,500 years ago, the Greek philosopher Heraclitus argued that nothing in this world stands still: not rivers, not cities, and not people. In this video, we follow his idea into your closest relationships and ask a hard question: who exactly did you fall in love with?
We look at his famous river, the Ship of Theseus, the “end of history illusion” in psychology, and how love often begins with a portrait built partly by your own imagination. Then we ask what it really means to stay with someone when both of you keep changing, and why Heraclitus’s image of a bow and a lyre might describe lasting love better than a fairy tale does.
This is a dark philosophy look at human connection: identity, change, grief for the living, and the courage to keep choosing a moving river.
If this made you think of someone, share it with them, and tell us in the comments: have you ever mourned a person who was still alive?
Sources and further reading: Heraclitus, surviving fragments (the river and the bow and lyre); Plutarch, Life of Theseus; Jordi Quoidbach, Daniel Gilbert, and Timothy Wilson, “The End of History Illusion” (2013).
