Fifteen fast food items Americans ordered by the million and cannot order
anymore — with the year each one launched, the year it was pulled, and
the specific decision that ended it.
One was removed because of the box it came in, not the food. One was
discontinued in the same year a documentary film about it was released.
One cost McDonald's around two hundred million dollars in advertising
before it failed. And number one was never discontinued at all — it was
changed, in 1992, and people have been arguing about it ever since.
In this episode: KFC potato wedges, Jack in the Box Frings, McSpaghetti,
the Burger King Yumbo, Pizza Hut's Bigfoot, the Priazzo, the Bell Beefer,
the Hula Burger, the McLean Deluxe, McPizza, Wendy's SuperBar, the McDLT,
Super Size, the Arch Deluxe, and the fried apple pie.
Shelf Life is a documentary series about American food that no longer
exists. New episode every week.

HOW THIS VIDEO IS MADE
Research: Researched from company records, period advertising archives,
trade reporting and contemporaneous news coverage. Where sources disagree
on a date or a reason, we say so in the narration rather than choosing
one.

Prelinger Archives, Internet Archive, Library of Congress and US National
Archives. All product packaging shown is photographed from original
period packaging. Atmospheric footage is created using AI generation
tools. No product, packaging or brand imagery is AI generated.

voice technology, from a script written for this episode.
