While my trip up to the Twin Ports was not just for railfanning, I did spend a couple hours on the CN Superior sub in Oliver, WI just east of the bridge across the St. Louis River. While not very noticeable at this spot, from here up to about Proctor where Northbound traffic usually splits off towards the Missabe sub and Southbounds come off the Rainy sub, there's a steep grade (Steelton Hill) requiring the use of helpers as will be seen in this video. Helper sets are either attached at Steelton yard just west of this spot or at the busier Pokegama yard not far east. They are set up to automatically detach from the trains at the top of the hill and head back south for the next Northbound. I hope to get more of Steelton Hill my next visit up here. A pair of intermodals are seen each direction plus the helper set that would help push the Northbound up Steelton Hill. Quite a bit more railfanning action the next day. Enjoy and don't forget to comment and subscribe!!! 0:00 Driving over the Oliver Bridge which crosses the St. Louis River between Duluth, MN and Oliver, WI. The CN Superior sub is above the road which is MN-39/WI-105. It was opened in 1916 and is 1900 ft long 0:57 Southbound CN lite power (helper set for climb up Steelton Hill) returning to CN Pokegama yard to help a Northbound that I would see later climb up the hill.
