What did ancient humans do when survival wasn't the only thing on their minds? From a 73,000-year-old drawing in South Africa to a Neanderthal who survived severe injuries, the evidence shows a past that looks surprisingly human. In this video we look at what archaeology can and cannot tell us: early art, storytelling, jewelry, care for the injured, and the bond between people and a sick puppy 14,000 years ago. We also stay honest about the uncertainty. Many of these interpretations are debated, and we explain where the evidence stops.
