But her father, blinded by his hunger for a government post, agrees to hand her over as a concubine to the powerful Minister Heo, and on the road to Seoul bandits strike and everything falls apart. To save her imprisoned father, Chae-bong becomes a gisaeng; Pil-seong casts aside his pride and becomes a lowly clerk to stay near her; and on one moonlit night a song drifts out of the governor's quarters: "Gambyeolgok." This is "Chaebong Gambyeolgok," a novel widely read in late Joseon. Stay until the satisfying end, where the corrupt minister and the swindler finally get what they deserve.
