In Episode 13 of The Whole Woman with Pamela Marie Haskel, I talk about what diversity really means and why embracing cultural differences can help us build greater understanding and unity.
I share from my own family heritage, including my Cherokee and Native American heritage, Creole and African American heritage, and Irish heritage. I reflect on how our family histories and cultural backgrounds can shape our understanding of who we are and how we connect with others.
Drawing from my experiences learning and teaching French, including teaching first graders and ninth graders, I talk about why learning a language goes beyond a textbook. Meaningful conversation, practice, patience, and interaction with native speakers can help us better understand both language and culture.
I also talk about Southern hospitality, cross-cultural communication, and ways we can alleviate barriers when people are learning a language that is not their native language. We can be patient and willing to communicate with people whose language, customs, experiences, or perspectives may differ from our own.
I also discuss diversity within the church. Can we move beyond denominational and cultural comfort zones and become a body of Christ where people from different backgrounds are embraced and valued? Can we learn how to interact, connect, and build relationships with people who may look or think differently from us?
For me, diversity means embracing cultural differences and unity.
