Your RRSP tax refund is not free money from the government. It is a return of tax you overpaid during the year, and every dollar sitting in your RRSP is co-owned by the CRA until you withdraw it and pay the deferred tax. Spending the refund instead of reinvesting it is the single most common RRSP mistake in Canada. The gross-up strategy fixes this by calculating your true contribution target so that after the refund is reinvested, your total RRSP contribution equals your full pre-tax allocation. At a 30% marginal bracket, a $10,000 contribution generates a $3,000 refund; the gross-up target is $14,286 because the $4,286 refund gets reinvested to reach that total. A short-term RRSP loan taken in February bridges the gap between available cash and the gross-up target, with the refund repaying the loan within 60-90 days. Inside the RRSP, asset location matters: US dividend-paying ETFs belong here because the Canada-US tax treaty exempts RRSPs from the 15% withholding tax that TFSAs cannot recover. The exit strategy is equally critical. Drawing too aggressively from an RRSP in retirement can push net income above the $93,454 OAS clawback threshold, triggering a 15% recovery tax on Old Age Security.
Key numbers:
RRSP refund = tax deferral, not a gift (100% of withdrawals taxed as income)
Gross-up formula: Contribution ÷ (1 - marginal tax rate) = true target
Example at 30% bracket: $10,000 ÷ 0.70 = $14,286 gross-up target
2025 RRSP contribution limit: $32,490 (18% of 2024 earned income)
RRSP deadline for 2025 tax year: March 2, 2026
US dividend withholding in RRSP: 0% (tax treaty) vs TFSA: 15%
OAS clawback threshold (2025-2026): $93,454 net income
