“Healthy eating is expensive.” True, false… or incomplete? In this part of Between Bites with Dr Hosnieh Fathi, the panel tackles one of the most common barriers people raise when trying to eat better: the cost of healthy food. But the answer isn’t simply yes or no. The conversation explores the complicated relationship between price, accessibility, convenience, food quality, cooking skills, seasonality and the way we shop. Can local markets sometimes offer better value and flavour than supermarkets? Does paying more automatically mean you’re buying something healthier? Do you really need to buy organic food to eat well? And are we sometimes overlooking affordable foods such as beans, vegetables and seasonal produce because we don’t know how to turn them into meals we actually want to eat? The panel also discusses how modern food expectations can influence what reaches our plates. Consumers have become accustomed to fruit and vegetables looking a certain way — uniform, polished and visually perfect — even though appearance does not necessarily tell us whether something is more nutritious, more flavourful or better value. That raises another important issue: food waste. If perfectly edible produce is rejected because of its shape or appearance, are our expectations contributing to the problem? The discussion also challenges another assumption: Expensive does not automatically mean healthy. You don’t have to buy premium brands. You don’t have to buy everything organic. And if the choice is between eating conventional fruit and vegetables or avoiding them entirely because the organic version is unaffordable, perfection may be getting in the way of progress. At the same time, the panel recognises that affordability and access are genuine challenges for many households, particularly during a cost-of-living crisis. There is no single food-shopping strategy that solves every person’s circumstances. The conversation therefore moves beyond price alone. Because even when affordable ingredients are available, another barrier remains: Do people know what to do with them? Beans, vegetables, tomatoes, aubergines, garlic and other relatively simple ingredients can become delicious meals — but only if people have the confidence, knowledge, time and skills to prepare them. That is why improving nutrition cannot simply mean telling people to “eat healthier.” We also need to think about: food education, cooking confidence, accessibility, convenience, seasonality, food waste, and where people are starting from. Because healthy eating does not have to mean perfection. Sometimes the better question is: Where am I now — and what is the next realistic step I can take?
