McDonald’s used to represent one simple idea: cheap, fast, reliable food.
But in America, that promise is becoming harder to recognize.
Over the past decade, McDonald’s menu prices have increased dramatically, while customers have become increasingly sensitive to value. At the same time, competition from chains like Taco Bell, Wendy’s, Chick-fil-A and Chipotle has changed what Americans expect from fast food.
So what actually happened to McDonald’s?
In this documentary, we look at the bigger story behind McDonald’s current problems — rising prices, changing customer behavior, franchise economics, declining traffic, value-menu battles, restaurant technology, competition and the changing economics of American fast food.
We also look at why McDonald’s can still report sales growth while customer visits decline, why lower-income consumers matter so much to the brand, and why the company is putting so much emphasis on value, loyalty programs, beverages and technology.
The bigger question isn't simply whether McDonald’s food has become "worse."
It's whether McDonald’s can still deliver on the promise that made it one of America's most recognizable restaurants: affordable food that is fast, convenient and predictable.
This video uses company filings, McDonald’s official announcements, consumer research, industry reporting and third-party data to examine what is happening to the Golden Arches in 2026.
