Drug Abuse Fuels Security Fears | Northern Nigeria's Youth Crisis | Fake Drugs Under Scrutiny

Drug abuse and insecurity are threatening young people across Northern Nigeria, with concerns about addiction, displacement, violence and recruitment into criminal groups. A national drug-use survey published in 2018 estimated that 14.3 million Nigerians aged 15 to 64 had used drugs in the preceding year, with prevalence rates of 13.6% in the North-East, 12% in the North-West and 10% in the North-Central. Jonathan Onoja, Corporate Safety and Security Consultant, joins News Central to discuss the relationship between drug abuse and insecurity, the vulnerability of young people to criminal exploitation, and the role of prevention, rehabilitation and security agencies in protecting communities across Northern Nigeria.
