A dispute over the recognition of Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST)’s Bachelor of Pharmacy programme has sparked debate in Parliament, with Minister of State for Education and Sports Peter Ogwang presenting the government’s position.
The Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda (PSU) withdrew professional recognition of the programme, citing concerns about staffing, departmental leadership and training standards. The National Council for Higher Education (NCHE), however, maintains that the programme remains academically accredited.
On October 28, 2026, Minister Ogwang told Parliament that pharmacy degrees issued by MUST are valid and assured students that the programme is proceeding lawfully. The controversy has raised questions about the separate roles of academic accreditation and professional recognition, particularly for students preparing to graduate.
What does the dispute mean for MUST pharmacy students, and how will the government resolve the disagreement between PSU and NCHE?
