Dragon Quest IV [DS] Playthrough #043, Palais de Léon: Boss: Marquis de Léon

To view the commentary version, click here:    • Dragon Quest IV [DS] Commentary #043, Pala...   The party has hunted monsters near Laissez Fayre on the southwestern continent, Libeccio, in preparation for visiting the Palais de Léon. Before going to the palace, they visit Riverton on the small south-central continent, Ostro (time index 0:35). In Riverton, they get Heorot a Dream Blade at the Weapon Shop. It's a nice step up from his Cautery Sword. At the Armour Shop, they get him an Iron Mask. If you really want to grind, you can get him a Dragon Mail and a Dragon Shield. After that, the party teleports to the Palais de Léon (time index 2:53). My party here will be Heorot, Alena, Kiryl, and Maya. Armed with the Magic Key from the cave to the west, they can now enter the castle through its red doors. Along the northern corridor, whom do they find but Ragnar (time index 4:06)! He is in the hands of some guards, but that is nothing he cannot handle. He seems to recognize the chosen hero right away. However, as he points out, there is a monster to deal with. In the secret throne room (time index 4:59), the party finds the Marquis de Léon. Apparently, this mysterious Psaro the Manslayer has "appointed" him ruler of this land. We'll see about that! He transforms into a huge monster and attacks. The Marquis de Léon offers powerful physical attacks, he can strike twice in one round, and he can use the Sizz spell. Kiryl will be very helpful in this battle. His Kabuff spell, applied numerous times, will reduce the Marquis's physical damage from 40+ to single digits. His Fizzle spell will silence the Marquis briefly. Maya's Sap spell will also be useful here to lower the Marquis's defence so that the party's physical attacks will do more damage. Her Sizzle spell will also do decent damage if she has not learned Frizzle yet. Heorot can provide good healing with his Midheal spell, but he should attack as much as possible. Alena's role is simply to attack until the Marquis is dead. In all, this is a pretty easy battle with good tactics. The Marquis de Léon leaves behind a good amount of experience when defeated (time index 10:02). Heorot reaches Level 17, Alena jumps to Level 17, Kiryl reaches Level 16, Borya reaches Level 16, Torneko jumps to Level 19, and Meena reaches Level 18. The Marquis also drops a treasure chest that contains a suit of Full Plate Armour. In the battle's aftermath (time index 11:50), the Marquis turns back to his normal form, Prince Leon. It's as if everyone in the castle has suddenly come out of a trance. Better yet, as the party leaves, the mighty Ragnar McRyan joins them in their quest to defeat Psaro the Manslayer. Nice! In the southeast corner of the main floor, the jumpy chancellor has information about Balzack's whereabouts (time index 13:44). Ah, Balzack is now in Zamoksva. Let's get after him! When the party returns to the world map (time index 14:49), the music has changed to a strong march tune. Very nice. The Full Plate Armour that the party just one from the Marquis de Léon is a nice upgrade for Ragnar. Back in Endor, they sell off some old equipment and rest up for the next adventure.
