Würzburg Cathedral, officially known as St. Kilian’s Cathedral, is one of the most significant churches in Lower Franconia and a magnificent example of Romanesque and Baroque architecture. Located in the heart of Würzburg, it serves as the seat of the Bishop of the Diocese of Würzburg.
Construction of the cathedral began in the year 1001, and it was consecrated in 1040. Over the centuries, the cathedral underwent numerous alterations and expansions, most notably in the Baroque style. The structure incorporates a variety of architectural styles; its core framework, characterized by massive walls and small rounded arches, dates back to the Romanesque period, while later additions—such as the choir windows—exhibit Gothic influences.
