Join me and Mrs W on holiday in Italy, as we head out on our second walking adventure with a group of 12 fellow walkers and our local guide, this time to the summit of the mighty Mount Vesuvius. While most visitors to Vesuvius begin their climb at the National Park entrance and follow the popular Sentiero del Gran Cono, our guide, a local volcanologist, took us on a quieter and much more interesting route. We started our walk along Strada Matrone, before approaching the summit from the reverse side of the Sentiero del Gran Cono. Along the way, we enjoyed some fantastic scenery and a fascinating insight into the geology and history of this iconic volcano. At the summit, we were rewarded with spectacular views across the Bay of Naples, the volcano's enormous crater, and the surrounding landscape. We also got a glimpse into the incredible history of Vesuvius and the devastating eruption of AD 79, which buried the ancient Roman towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
