I've been interested in polyrhythms and generative music for a long time. Several years ago I came across Lucid Rhythms' Space Pendulum, and it really moved me. There's something beautiful about watching a simple set of repeating motions gradually drift apart, form unexpected patterns, and eventually come back together.
More recently, it inspired me to start experimenting with building my own generative polyrhythm instrument. Fourteen Orbits is the first result.
Fourteen dots travel along individual circular orbits at slightly different but mathematically related speeds. Each orbit triggers a note as its dot crosses the center line. The timing is completely deterministic. There's no random timing, so the dots slowly move in and out of phase, creating smaller alignments along the way before all fourteen eventually converge.
This is the first version of the project, and I'm planning to keep experimenting with the idea and see where it goes.
If you like this kind of thing, definitely check out Lucid Rhythms and Space Pendulum. His work is awesome and was a major inspiration for this experiment. • "Space Pendulum" // 4 Hours of Dreamy Melo...
