Enjoy the warmth of fall decorating alongside the open beauty of the North Carolina coast. ⚓ THE HISTORY OF OAK ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE Completed in 1958, Oak Island Lighthouse stands in Caswell Beach near the mouth of the Cape Fear River. It replaced the 1903 Cape Fear Lighthouse on nearby Bald Head Island, continuing the area's long tradition of guiding mariners toward the river and warning of dangerous offshore shoals. The lighthouse structure stands 153 feet tall, while its light is approximately 169 feet above the water because the tower sits on a rise. Its distinctive gray, white, and black sections are incorporated into the concrete itself. Inside, a series of ships’ ladders provides 131 steps to the gallery level. When first activated, its original lighting system made it the brightest lighthouse in the United States and the second brightest in the world. In 2004, ownership of the lighthouse transferred to the Town of Caswell Beach.
