Most guides still tell you to park at the Linville Falls visitor center. There isn't one anymore — Hurricane Helene destroyed it, and the spur road may stay closed for years.
Here's what's actually there in 2026.
I filmed this on location in late September 2026. Everything below is what I found on the ground.
WHERE TO PARK NOW
The US Forest Service gravel lot on Old NC Highway 105. Free, and it's much larger than you'd expect. This is the access point for everything — Erwins View Trail, Duggers Creek Falls, all of it.
The old visitor center spur at Milepost 316.4 is closed.
RESTROOMS — THIS IS NEW
Every current guide says there are no restrooms at Linville Falls. There are. Toilets have been installed at the parking area. Nobody online has caught up with this yet.
THE TRAIL
Erwins View Trail is 1.6 miles round trip, moderate. Some climbing, nothing technical. Rooty surface, muddy after rain — wear proper shoes.
THE THREE OVERLOOKS
Upper Falls Overlook — first one you reach. You're almost level with the water as the river widens, pauses, then disappears over the edge. Worth knowing: sources published through mid-2026 still list the Upper Falls Trail as closed after Helene. It's open.
Chimney View — looks down on the lower falls and the rock formations beside them. In my opinion the best view of the waterfall itself, and it's most of the way along the trail.
Erwins View — the end of the trail. Panorama of the falls and the Linville Gorge in one frame.
Most people walk straight to Erwins and treat the others as waypoints. Don't.
STILL CLOSED
The Plunge Basin Trail (view from the opposite bank) and the Gorge Trail (down to the foot of the falls) remain closed from Helene damage. People are ignoring the signs. Don't — that terrain is why they're closed.
DUGGERS CREEK FALLS — SAME PARKING LOT
0.3 miles the other way from the same lot. A small loop to a 10-foot waterfall in a narrow slot canyon with a wooden bridge directly over it. About 20 minutes. Very flow-dependent — a different waterfall after rain. Almost nobody walks it.
ABOUT THE FALLS
Linville Falls is roughly 90 feet across three tiers, dropping into the Linville Gorge — often called the Grand Canyon of the Southern Appalachians.
PRACTICAL
Free. No gate. Open daylight hours. Dogs welcome on a leash.
Good for older kids who are steady on moderate terrain. With toilets now at the lot, it's a far easier family trip than it was a year ago.
Nearest ER: Cannon Memorial Hospital, Linville NC — about 20 minutes.
