Adding and taking away, the Halloween way! It's Sparky's first trick-or-treat, and he wants ten sweets. A treat adds sweets to his bucket… and a trick takes them away! Logic the mummy gives him five, and three more: five plus three makes eight. Then a skeleton jumps out of a green door, and three sweets go flying. Can three back make eight again? And at the crooked house, Buildy's Sweet-o-Matic has a lever: up for plus, down for minus. Which way should Sparky pull it? The big idea: adding puts more in, taking away takes some out, and one undoes the other. Take three away, add three back, and you have what you started with. Try it at home with a grown-up: put five sweets in a bowl, add three, take three away. How many now?
