Jacob’s sons were far from perfect. Jealousy, hatred, deception, rivalry, bitterness, and family conflict were already evident among them—vices that have continued to trouble humanity throughout history. Yet, their story did not end in hatred.
It ended with peace, love, reconciliation, and forgiveness.
Joseph had every reason to remain bitter. His brothers had betrayed him, sold him into slavery, and caused him years of suffering. Yet when the opportunity came to repay evil with evil, Joseph chose forgiveness. His heart had been transformed. In his response to his brothers, we see something of the heart of Christ—a heart big enough to forgive grievous wrongs and allow God to turn pain into purpose.
The story of Joseph challenges us to examine our own hearts. What are we carrying that we need to release? Who do we need to forgive? Will bitterness have the final word, or will we allow God's grace to lead us to peace?
One day, our own earthly story will come to an end. May we not reach that moment still carrying hatred, resentment, unforgiveness, and old wounds. May we, like Joseph, learn to forgive, love, reconcile, and rest in the peace of God.
May our lives—and ultimately our ending—be marked by peace, love, and forgiveness. And when we finally sleep, may we truly rest in peace, knowing that something far more glorious awaits us: the resurrection and eternal life with Christ.
