Rain on the visor, rain on the road your window's the only thing lit on the block I didn't call, a call leaves a record I'm just a man on a bike who's already decided You've got a nine o'clock, a mother who worries a whole life that notices when you're gone I know exactly what I'm asking so I'm only going to ask it once Tell them you're sleeping tell them the rain took your phone I'll be the reason you're awake and I'll have you home before the morning learns your name You come down in a coat over not much hair already wet before you reach the street I hand you the spare helmet, you hold it like a question then you put it on, and that's the answer Past the bakery, past the bridge with the one good light the city thins out like a thought I'm losing your hands find my jacket, then my ribs then you stop pretending Somewhere past the last gas station the speedometer stops being a number I feel you laugh against my back before I hear it a man can live a long time on that Tell them you're sleeping tell them the rain took your phone I'll be the reason you're awake and I'll have you home before the morning learns your name We stop on the ridge, the whole city a handful of lights somebody dropped you say, we should go back I say, we should neither of us moves Tell them you're sleeping tell them the rain took your phone I'll be the reason you're awake and tomorrow can have us when it finds us Tell them you were sleeping.
