Day 26: Real-Life Small Talk | 30-Day English Speaking Challenge for Beginners | English Flow Studio
Welcome to Day 26 of the 30-Day English Speaking Challenge with English Flow Studio.
Today’s topic is Real-Life Small Talk.
Johnny will guide you through a slow and natural English podcast about how to start, continue, and end everyday conversations more naturally.
This lesson is not only about asking simple questions.
It is about learning how to keep a conversation alive.
You will practice reacting to what someone says, adding something about yourself, asking natural follow-up questions, sharing short stories, changing topics smoothly, and avoiding awkward silence.
This lesson is designed for beginner and elementary English learners who want to improve their speaking, listening, pronunciation, confidence, and conversation fluency through slow and clear English.
You do not need to pause the video.
You do not need to wait for instructions.
Simply listen to Johnny, follow his rhythm, and try to speak along with him as naturally as you can.
If you miss a word or make a mistake, keep going.
The goal is not perfection.
The goal is connection.
In Day 26, you will practice how to:
• Start natural small talk
• Keep a conversation going
• React before asking another question
• Ask natural follow-up questions
• Avoid sounding like an interview
• Add one extra detail to your answers
• Share short personal experiences
• Use mini-stories in conversation
• Move naturally from one topic to another
• Show interest in what someone says
• Talk about weekends, work, travel, food, hobbies, and everyday life
• Handle short answers naturally
• Know when a conversation should continue
• End small talk politely
One of the most useful patterns from Day 26 is:
React → Add → Ask
For example:
“I went hiking this weekend.”
“That sounds nice.”
“I haven’t been hiking in months.”
“Where did you go?”
React.
Add.
Ask.
This simple pattern can make conversations feel much more natural.
Another useful pattern is:
Answer → Add One Detail
Instead of:
“How was your weekend?”
“Good.”
Try:
“Pretty good. I met some friends for lunch on Sunday.”
That one extra detail gives the other person something to respond to.
You will also hear useful everyday expressions such as:
“How’s it going?”
“How have you been?”
“What have you been up to?”
“Any plans for the weekend?”
“Have you been here before?”
“Really?”
“That sounds nice.”
“That sounds rough.”
“Same here.”
“I know what you mean.”
“No way.”
“What happened?”
“How did that go?”
“What was it like?”
“Would you recommend it?”
“How did you get into that?”
“I’ve had that happen too.”
“I’ve never tried that.”
“Speaking of…”
“By the way…”
“That reminds me…”
“I should get going.”
“It was nice talking to you.”
“Good seeing you.”
“Talk to you later.”
“Have a good one.”
Day 8 helped you start small talk.
Day 26 helps you keep it going.
The focus is no longer just:
“What should I ask?”
Now the focus is:
“How do I respond to what the other person just said?”
That is what makes real conversation feel natural.
Day 25 also taught you how to tell a short story.
Today, those mini-stories become part of small talk.
Instead of saying:
“My morning was busy.”
You can say:
“My morning was busy. I missed my train, so I had to take a taxi.”
Now the other person has something to react to.
26 days done. 4 days to go.
You are now in the final four days of the challenge.
If you completed today’s lesson, leave a comment:
“Day 26 complete!”
And answer this small-talk question:
“What have you been up to lately?”
You can write:
“I’ve been pretty busy with work lately.”
Then add one detail:
“I’m working on a new project.”
And maybe one more:
“But I’m hoping to relax this weekend.”
Subscribe to English Flow Studio and continue the final four days of the 30-Day English Speaking Challenge with Johnny.
Keep listening.
Keep reacting.
Keep asking follow-up questions.
Keep sharing a little about yourself.
Keep the conversation moving.
