Imagine paying millions of naira for a house, obtaining documents, paying land royalties — and then waking up one day to discover that your roof has been removed and your property is being claimed by someone else.
That is the disturbing situation reported in Ajeromi-Ifelodun and the Ajegunle axis of Lagos, where residents have alleged years of property seizures, de-roofing and demolitions linked to disputes over land ownership and lease payments involving the Ojora family.
According to the report by FIJ, 15 houses were reportedly demolished and 28 roofs removed on August 7, with residents alleging that some properties had been sold to multiple people or seized over disputed lease arrears.
Some residents also alleged that they were asked to pay millions of naira to settle debts that they said were originally much smaller, while others claimed they had receipts and deeds but still lost access to their properties.
The Ojora side, however, disputed the allegations, maintaining that the family relies on court judgments and lawful processes concerning its land rights, and denying responsibility for unlawful demolitions or fraudulent receipts.
This story raises a critical question for EVERY PROPERTY BUYER:
WHO REALLY OWNS THE PROPERTY YOU ARE BUYING?
A receipt is not enough.
A deed is not enough.
A family history is not enough.
Even possession of a building is not enough.
Before you commit your hard-earned money to any property, you must properly investigate the root of title, ownership, encumbrances, court judgments, previous transactions, survey records and other relevant title documents.
Because the biggest real estate mistake you can make is not buying an expensive property.
IT IS BUYING A PROPERTY YOU CANNOT SECURE.
