What is Unit Commitment in Power Systems? How do power system engineers decide which generating units should be switched ON or OFF to supply a specified electrical load economically? In this A2E2 lecture, understand the fundamentals of Unit Commitment with a practical example involving three generating units and a 550 MW load.
⚡ UNIT COMMITMENT IN POWER SYSTEMS — INTRODUCTION & EXAMPLE
Unit Commitment (UC) is an important power system operation and optimization problem. It determines which generating units should be committed to operation and during which time intervals, while satisfying electricity demand and operational constraints at minimum overall cost.
Unlike Economic Load Dispatch (ELD), which determines the power output of already committed generators, Unit Commitment also considers the ON/OFF status of generating units. Understanding this distinction is essential for power system analysis, generation scheduling and competitive examinations.
📚 WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
In this lecture, we explore:
✅ Definition and fundamental concept of Unit Commitment.
✅ Why all available generating units may not need to operate simultaneously.
✅ The difference between Unit Commitment and Economic Load Dispatch.
✅ Three generating units supplying a total system load of 550 MW.
✅ How generator cost functions influence generation scheduling decisions.
✅ The relationship between generator operating status, power output and operating cost.
✅ How to think about selecting a suitable combination of generating units to meet demand.
✅ The importance of generation limits and power balance in scheduling.
✅ An introduction to the economic and operational constraints of Unit Commitment.
✅ The role of Unit Commitment in reliable and economical power system operation.
⚙️ THREE-UNIT, 550 MW LOAD-MANAGEMENT EXAMPLE
Consider a power system with three generating units, each having its own generation cost function. The total demand is 550 MW.
The central question is: Which combination of generating units should be switched ON to meet the required demand economically?
The solution involves evaluating feasible combinations of committed units, checking their generation capacity, and considering the operating costs associated with meeting the load.
Important distinction: the lowest-cost commitment cannot be established from cost functions alone if the necessary generation limits, unit operating constraints and other relevant data are missing. A complete solution must satisfy demand and all applicable operating constraints.
🎯 WHO SHOULD WATCH THIS LECTURE?
• B.E./B.Tech Electrical and Electronics Engineering students.
• First-year students building their electrical engineering foundation.
• Power Systems students studying Unit Commitment and Economic Load Dispatch.
• GATE EE aspirants preparing for Power System Operation and Optimization.
• ESE, State AE/JE and PSU examination candidates.
• M.Tech students studying power system optimization and generation scheduling.
• Electrical engineers preparing for core technical interviews.
💡 WHY LEARN UNIT COMMITMENT?
Electrical power systems must supply changing demand while maintaining reliability and controlling generation costs. Unit Commitment helps determine which generating units should operate, while Economic Load Dispatch allocates the required generation among the committed units.
