The Miracle of Avinashi – The Boy Swallowed by the Crocodile In the ancient temple town of Avinashi, in the Kongu region of Tamil Nadu, two young boys grew up together as close friends. One day, they went to bathe in the temple tank (sacred lake), as was customary in those times. Suddenly, tragedy struck. A mighty crocodile emerged from the waters and swallowed one of the boys whole, disappearing beneath the lake. The village was plunged into grief. The boy’s parents were devastated, mourning the loss of their child. Time passed—days became months, and months became years—but their sorrow remained. Years later, the surviving boy had grown up, and the day of his Upanayanam (sacred thread ceremony) arrived—a joyous rite of passage celebrated with music, prayers, and family gatherings. Yet, in the neighboring house, the parents of the lost child wept bitterly, remembering the son they never got to see grow up. On that very day, the great Shaivite saint Sundarar Moorthy Nayanar arrived in Avinashi. Hearing the contrasting sounds—celebration in one home and mourning in another—he asked the villagers about the reason behind such sorrow amidst joy. Moved by compassion, Sundarar led the grieving parents to the sacred lake. Standing at its banks, he sang a powerful hymn in praise of Lord Shiva, invoking divine grace with complete devotion. As he sang, nature itself seemed to pause. Then, before the astonished eyes of the villagers, the crocodile emerged once again. And in a miracle beyond human understanding, it returned the boy alive. But even more wondrous—the child was not restored as the young boy who had been swallowed, but as a grown boy of the age he would have naturally become, as though time itself had continued to nurture him within divine protection.
