Taipei, 1991. Autumn rain comes down on a back lane in Wanhua, tapping through the golden-rain trees and bringing the little leaves and pink seed pods down along the kerb, and the last place still open on the block is an old family coffee house — a row of opal globe lamps behind the glass, siphon brewers bubbling over their blue flames, and a wood-drum roaster still going at the back. Three and a half hours of warm 90's lofi ambience and steady rain — for deep sleep, sleepless nights, and the kind of quiet you only find after midnight. #lofimusic #rainsounds #sleepmusic A narrow three-storey tiled street house with iron grilles on every window, washing still out on the bamboo poles, water tanks and a little metal shack up on the roof. Down at street level the whole front is still glowing: dark timber panelling, red-brown leather booths and small marble tables, a brass till, a glass cabinet with a few plates of castella left on its shelves, and a wall of little wooden drawers of coffee beans. Behind the second window a girl in white headphones has taken the corner table with her exercise book open and an iced coffee going watery — it's her family's shop and she lives upstairs — while a small caramel puppy sleeps on the ledge with his back to the glass and her grandfather watches a siphon come up. Far off on a dark hill, one long red roof still catches a little light.
