First trimester screening can feel confusing, especially when you hear about an NT/NB ultrasound, Dual Marker test, NIPT, amniocentesis and CVS one after another. But what does each test actually tell you, and do you really need all of them? Understanding these pregnancy screening tests can help you make informed decisions about your pregnancy and understand how doctors assess the risk of genetic abnormalities in the baby. Questions covered in this Video : ✅What is an NT/NB or Level 1 ultrasound? It checks key markers, such as the nasal bone and nuchal translucency, during early pregnancy. ✅What is the Dual Marker test? It is a blood test that measures hCG and PAPP-A to assess the risk of certain genetic conditions. ✅What does a high-risk Dual Marker result mean? A high-risk result does not mean the baby definitely has a genetic condition. It is a screening result, not a diagnosis. ✅What is NIPT? Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) uses the mother’s blood to study small fragments of the baby’s DNA and screen for certain chromosomal abnormalities. ✅When can NIPT be done? NIPT can generally be performed from around 10 weeks of pregnancy, when there is enough fetal DNA in the mother’s blood. ✅What are Down syndrome, Edwards syndrome and Patau syndrome? These are major chromosomal conditions associated with an extra copy of chromosomes 21, 18 and 13, respectively. ✅How accurate is NIPT? NIPT is a highly sensitive screening test, particularly for common chromosomal conditions, but it is not a diagnostic test. ✅What happens if a screening test shows high risk? Doctors may recommend a confirmatory diagnostic test, such as amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling (CVS). ✅Is NIPT better than the Dual Marker test? NIPT is more sensitive for certain chromosomal conditions, but the right test depends on the pregnancy and the doctor’s recommendation. ✅Does NIPT detect every genetic problem? No. NIPT cannot detect every genetic disorder or structural abnormality. ✅Why is the Level 2 ultrasound still important? The Level 2 ultrasound examines the baby’s developing organs and physical structures in greater detail. ✅Do all pregnant women need every genetic test? Not necessarily. The appropriate prenatal screening depends on individual risk factors and medical advice. If you are confused about Dual Marker, NT/NB ultrasound or NIPT during pregnancy, speak with your gynaecologist or a qualified prenatal specialist to understand which tests are appropriate for you.
