Fourteen. Ninety-five. Sixteen. The houses are in a row, but the numbers aren't. Why did the little plate on your door need a whole system behind it? From a census in 1770 Vienna, where house numbers helped find men for the army, to a building that split into four, London's twenty-five Albert Streets, Philadelphia's block ranges, odd and even sides, Chicago's renumbering and the last few feet of a delivery: how a house number became a shared instruction for records, strangers and a changing city. 0:00 The number that does not fit 1:11 A city stored in people 2:30 Vienna: paint meets paperwork 3:54 One building becomes four 5:17 An address is a shared agreement 6:34 London: the right number, wrong street 7:58 The plate is not the address 9:16 Leave room for houses that do not exist 10:40 Why split odd and even? 11:55 Chicago changes the labels 13:11 The last few feet 14:28 Being findable cuts both ways 15:51 The stranger at your door The visitor, the six-house street, the block diagrams and the final delivery are illustrative examples, not historical records; Rowland Hill's brass-plate story is a reported anecdote. Vienna, London, Philadelphia and Chicago are separate cases, not one chain of invention. Music is original and generated for this video.
