On the evening of April 5, 2001, jewelry store owner Daniel Carter was closing up his shop on Main Street in downtown Charleston, South Carolina. There was nothing unusual about what he was doing. Like every other jeweler in the city, Daniel had developed a routine. Before closing for the night, he collected every piece of jewelry displayed in the front windows and carefully placed it inside a heavy steel safe. He was putting away the last few pieces when everything changed. Two masked men suddenly stormed into the store.
