Walmart is putting digital price screens on the shelves of every store. It also owns a patent that describes changing the price of mayonnaise because there is tuna in a shopper's cart. The obvious explanation is the boring one: they save labour, and they make the shelf match the till. But in under two weeks Walmart promised three times never to use that patent, and nobody had shown it doing anything. So the question changes: why does a promise about something nobody did need making three times? The trail runs through Wendy's digital menu boards, Kroger's shelf labels and a letter from two senators, an FTC study of what feeds into online prices, a new law in Maryland, and a research group that counted more than a dozen Walmart pricing patents. Everyday Low Prices is the opposite of charging each person the most they would pay, and Walmart's letter is probably true. The walking the screens save shows up on a spreadsheet. What they cost doesn't. If a price could look different to everyone, what is it still promising?
