★ The story goes that the first ones carried the amplifiers out on foot. Not far - a few hours past the last houses, to a place where the dunes blocked the line of sight back toward town, which was the whole point. They played there because they weren't allowed to play anywhere else, and the generator was loud enough that somebody always had to sit beside it with a blanket over the housing to keep the sound down.
What nobody expected was what the desert did to the music. There's nothing out there to bounce off - no walls, no ceiling, nothing to send the sound back. A guitar line goes out and simply keeps going. The players said it made them patient. You stop trying to fill the space when the space can't be filled, so the parts got simpler, the phrases got longer, and the groove stopped pushing forward and started circling instead. People who came out to listen said you'd lose track of where the song had started and nobody considered this a problem.
The cassettes travelled further than the players ever did. Hand to hand, truck to truck, across borders that weren't supposed to be crossed. Most of them have no names on them at all - just a side A, a side B, and a lot of hiss where the wind got into the microphone.
That's what this set is reaching for. Looping guitar lines with room to breathe, hand percussion keeping the pulse, and a groove that circles instead of climbing. Dry, wide, and unhurried.
If you're into desert blues, Tuareg guitar, psychedelic cumbia, or anything hypnotic and slow-building, this one's for that. Cumbia Mutante is a channel for cumbia that refuses to stay the same shape. Subscribe if the desert got you, and tell us in the comments where you're listening from - we read all of them.
