In January 1956, Norfolk and Western No. 611 rolled onto its side at Cedar, West Virginia, and its engineer was killed. Yet by the Norfolk & Western Historical Society's dates it was the last class J retired, in 1959, and the only one of the fourteen that wasn't scrapped. So why was the wrecked engine the one they kept? Two federal accident reports, the historical society's rosters and a 1984 ASME history tell it, through the 1986 Dismal Swamp derailment, two restorations and, by Norfolk Southern's account, a Mark Rothko painting.
Yes, the narrator is AI. I'm a train fanatic with a voice that would clear a room, so I let a robot read it. Everything else is done by hand: every fact comes from the ICC and NTSB reports, the historical society, the ASME, the museum and the railroad press, and I check every line before it goes up. No invented quotes, no made-up documents, no AI slop. Get something wrong and I'll fix it: tell me in the comments with a source.
