Welcome to Afriq DataScope — Statistics Explained Visually. This video presents an animated data visualization covering Africa’s Biggest Listed Companies by Market Cap | 2003 - 2025 | over time. Companies by Market Cap means comparing or ranking publicly traded companies based on the total market value of their shares. Market capitalization (Market Cap) is calculated as: Market Cap = Share Price × Total Number of Shares Example Suppose a company has: 1 billion shares Share price of $50 Then: $50 × 1 billion = $50 billion market cap So the company's market capitalization is $50 billion. Why is market cap important? It helps show the size and value that the stock market places on a company. Companies are often grouped as: Large-cap — very large companies Mid-cap — medium-sized companies Small-cap — smaller publicly traded companies Important difference Market Cap ≠ Revenue or Profit A company can have high revenue but a lower market cap, or relatively modest revenue but a high market cap, because market cap reflects share price and shares outstanding, influenced by investors' expectations and other factors. Data sources and methodology: This visualization compares 40 of Africa’s largest publicly listed companies by market capitalization from 2003 to 2025. Market capitalization represents the total market value of a company’s publicly traded shares. It was calculated as the company’s share price multiplied by the number of outstanding shares. It does not represent revenue, profit, assets or the overall size of the company’s operations. Figures from 2003 through 2025 generally represent market capitalization at or near the end of each calendar year. Where source figures were reported directly in US dollars, those values were retained. Market capitalizations reported in South African rand, Nigerian naira, Kenyan shillings, Ghanaian cedis or Egyptian pounds were converted into US dollars using the relevant historical year-end exchange rate. A blank cell means the company was not yet publicly listed, reliable historical data was unavailable, or the available figure could not be independently verified. Blank cells were not replaced with zero, and no interpolation was used to manufacture missing observations. Company names, listings and historical series were checked for corporate changes, listing dates and obvious inconsistencies. Values are presented in nominal US dollars and are not adjusted for inflation. Rankings may differ depending on the valuation date, exchange rate, share-price movement and source methodology. Sources: CompaniesMarketCap, Stock Analysis, official company annual reports, African securities exchanges, FinanceCharts and MLQ. Local-currency figures were converted into US dollars using historical year-end exchange rates. All values are expressed in US$ billions. #Africa #AfricanBusiness #MarketCap #LargestCompanies #AfricanEconomy #Business #Companies #Investing #Statistics #datavisualization Subscribe for more African statistics, rankings and visual stories.
