In Aqrab 1391 (November 2012), the Taliban launched an attack against a newly established local police post in the Namshir area of Sangin district, Helmand Province.
Namshir is located in the northeast of Sangin district, within the Malazi area. The post, jointly manned by local police and security police, was under the command of Commander Lal, known as Lalook Mama. To the north of the post, across the river, lay the dominating hills in an area called Shahzada.
After establishing cave-like positions in the Shahzada hills overlooking the new local police post, the Taliban mounted a DShK heavy machine gun in one of the positions and prepared an infantry assault group. When the DShK opened fire on the post, the enemy infantry group began its advance. During the attack, the Taliban repeatedly shifted the DShK from one fortified position to another, while the assault group approached the post from the eastern direction under covering fire.
The attack was reported through the coordination center to all security forces in Sangin district. The chief of staff of the 2nd Battalion, Captain Mohammad Yasin, ordered Commander Hamid Saifi (1st Company commander) and Commander Turiyali Hadi (2nd Company commander) to immediately move to support the local police post. Commander Hamid Saifi and Commander Turiyali Hadi formed a reinforcement group from personnel of both companies, took a 60 mm mortar with them, and moved toward the post.
Upon arrival, while the post was under fire from two directions, they first targeted the Taliban DShK position with the 60 mm mortar. Once the DShK fire was suppressed, they engaged the second enemy group that was advancing from the east under the cover of the machine gun. When the Taliban assault group lost its supporting DShK fire and came under fire from the Afghan National Army reinforcement group, it was forced to withdraw, and the enemy attack ended in failure.
This footage shows the defense of the local police post in Namshir, Sangin, against a Taliban assault in November 2012.
